Lisboa - Art Music Performance One Night Only

Human! You are a bullet in mankind’s machine gun! A thread in the fabric of history!
A single vegetable in the global garden!
Do not backfire! Do not unravel! Never succumb to the slugs!
Manpower is sweeping the world!
An unstoppable stampede of unflinching fighters against the tyrannies that plague our ailing planet!
A steam- roller, steaming towards inevitable victory!
So be part of the solution - use your power for the greater good – or risk getting trampled by the giant millipede of triumph that is - MANPOWER!
Maximum power!
Absolute control!
Non-stop action!
Productivity?
Oh yeah!
Wow!
Ecologically sound?
Right on!
Manpower is working night and day, achieving goals, hitting targets, coming first every time!
Look around you and see the results for yourself:
Before: hopelessness, desolation, dinosaurs, unsanitary conditions
Today: joy, discipline, camaraderie, great food etc.
Manpower strikes again, this time it’s Lisbon!
The place: Rua Poço dos Negros ... a sleepy, traditional Lisbon street, resplendent with shops and houses...yet because of a lack of manpower this street is not fulfilling its true potential!
Our Objective: on 18th December 2008 MANPOWER will be mobilised to deliver an unbelievable demonstration of the strength of mankind in unity through the multiple mediums of art, music, and performance! This extraordinary celebration will take place on the street and in the shops, bringing art to the people and the people together, thus striking a decisive blow against the nefarious enemies of manpower!
Long live the unshakeable basis of human unity!
Long live Art, Music, Performance! One night only!
Manpower is a group show of international artists, celebrating the power and strength of mankind in unity. The event will involve a wide range of media, including visual arts, performance and music. We propose that this take place on 20th December 2008, in different venues and shop windows on Rua do Poço dos Negros , Lisbon for one night only.
This will be the latest in a run of similar events curated and promoted by cosmicmegabrain, the London based arts collective. The most recent project took place in Beirut, Lebanon and had a re-run in London with the addition of Lebanese artists.
The past cosmicmegabrain productions, all one-night events with different themes, have all achieved a unique atmosphere; the joyous revelry and humour of the often participatorary performances combined with the diverse insights to be found in the numerous works, from painting to video, give the occasions a wide public appeal.
The success of these ventures and the interest expressed by the media ("the Times" published an article about us), have instilled the confidence and desire to open the international channels of cooperation that facilitates such non- commercial enterprises, with the aim of gathering the momentum to create increasingly ambitious shows worldwide.
Portuguese artists will be strongly represented and another bold cultural exchange will take place, with the show re-running in London, January 2009, providing a great opportunity for them to expand their horizons.
With the potential involvement and participation of the residents and shopkeepers on this street the project promises to be a spiritually uplifting, inspiring and motivating experience for the community
This event will be co-produced with Cão Solteiro and Urbart.

Spiritual Promises from Lost Prophets in London!

Back from Beirut cosmicmegabrain presents
another extraordinary night of Art, Music, Performance!
London 16 of October 2008
from 8pm till 11pm
Cordy House
87-95 Curtain Road, Ec 21 3BS
Spiritual Promises from lost prophets is a group show of predominantly London based artists that premiered in Beirut, Lebanon in September 2008. The intention of the show was to reproduce the atmosphere and flavour of an east-London cosmicmegabrain group show; but also to nurture a cultural exchange by feeding from the experience. As a result the show now includes works from emerging and established Lebanese artists.
The artists on show offer a diverse range of observations and speculations on the plight of mankind and our perilous journey into the unknown. The resulting contrast in their outlooks is reflective of the nature of humanity; visions of future utopias and dystopias; interpretations of the present and realizations of alternative realities; the cycles of degeneration and regeneration in mystical landscapes and a cursed earth.
The backdrop of Beirut was a poignant reminder of the flux and disruption that can be wrought on landscapes and peoples by events both predicted and unforeseen. London itself has been no stranger to devastation and rebirth and as such is no less appropriate settings for these visionaries, these prophets of art, who are at once propagators of truth and fiction yet whose prophesies are true indicators of the human condition in these times.
Performance by
Marc McGowan, Charlie Fox, The Fucks, American Spirit, Frances Thorburn
Works by

COSMICMEGABRAIN ON "THE TIMES"
Art, Music, Performance for one night only - Beirut
Spiritual Promises from lost prophets, is a group show of international artists, that took place in Beirut, Lebanon. The show was conceived by cosmicmegabrain collective after an invitation from the Beirut-based cultural association 98 weeks research project to take part with their upcoming project Beirut every-other-day, a series of workshops focusing on Beirut's urban space and its lingering ruins.

The 22 artists on show offer a diverse range of observations and speculations on the plight of mankind and our perilous journey into the unknown. The resulting contrast in their outlooks is reflective of the nature of humanity; visions of future utopias and dystopias; interpretations of the present and realizations of alternative realities; the cycles of degeneration and regeneration in mystical landscapes and a cursed earth.

On the infinite sea of life there are those who realise that our vessel is sinking, and despair. Yet there are those who rejoice in the knowledge that the vessel has always been lost.

Spiritual Promises
from Lost Prophets
The age of decadence is upon us! Let the spirit of degeneracy enter your soul!
Are you lost in life?Do you struggle against the tide of tedium and mundanity that seems to always goagainst you? Then perhaps you haven’t heard...in these times of moral decay, theworld belongs to the degenerates!
Since time immemorial the masses have subjugated themselves to the false realities of unscrupulous charlatans and phoney tricksters, be they the puerile distractions of the media, the repugnant propaganda of the ruling class or the hypocritical preaching of bloated popstars! Why subscribe to these sterile illusions, when there exists an infinitely more alluring alternative?
Awaken to a new world of illusions made real! A world inhabited by deranged deviants and insidious mutants! Here the legions of lowlifes and denizens of debauchery command reality! Only these degenerate visionaries can offer you spiritual guidance through their realm of perpetual twilight to the most fabulous place in the universe!
Cosmicmegabrain presents the new pioneers of the degenerate spirit in an unprecedented showcase and seminar, where you will learn how to:
*thrive in a world overwhelmed by filth
*believe in everything and nothing
*gain sustenance from a diet of depravity
*awaken the deviant within
*celebrate the apocalypse every day!
Behold the sordid preoccupations of society’s underbelly and the fruits of its many unclean loins, set loose without restraint or moderation, and you will find realities worth believing in!
Coming soon!

Spiritual Promises
from Lost Prophets
Cosmicmegabrain presents Spiritual Promises from lost prophets, a group show of London- based artists, to take place in Beirut, Lebanon. The show was conceived after an invitation from the Beirut-based cultural association 98 weeks research project to collaborate with their upcoming project Beirut every-other-day, a series of workshops focusing on Beirut’s urban space and its lingering ruins.
With our participation the project is potentially a catalyst for a unique cultural exchange. It will provide an opportunity for emerging artists to exhibit in an unknown environment – for most of them a land still shrouded in mystery – but will also answer a call from Beirut. Our collaborating partners, young Beirutees who have lived in London and became familiar with the thriving east-end art scene, perceived a lack of this vitality in their city. Although the city boasts many prestigious galleries, which attract renowned international artists, the underground, grass-roots level of London’s art world is largely unrepresented.
The concept of the show is a continuation of Cosmicmegabrain’s previous productions, The Pitz – celebrating the persistence of degenerate art, and Help Yourself – become an ego lover. The success of these shows, both held at Cordy House, a disused warehouse in the heart of Shoreditch, east London, was due to the creation of a vibrant and captivating atmosphere that transcended the elitist cultural barriers normally associated with the art world. This was achieved by focusing on the prevalence of humour, the spectacle of entertainment and the importance of audience participation.
As with the previous shows, the starting point and theme for Spiritual Promises from Lost Prophets is an ironic, tongue-in-cheek text; it is at once a recruitment ad for a fictional spiritual movement and a parody of self-help literature, steeped in evangelical fervour and apocalyptic hysteria. This approach is a deliberate step away from the usual format in the press releases of most art shows.
Our aim in Beirut is to stimulate and recruit local Beirutee artists to join and bolster a re-run of the show back in London. We at Cosmicmegabrain strongly believe in the possibility of creating an international network of like-minded individuals and organisations, through accumulative enthusiasm and infectious energy. Since our conception we have been steadily gaining valuable contacts, with galleries and creative organisations, in various countries. A successful show in Beirut would give us the confidence to pursue similar projects virtually anywhere in the world.

98Weeks Research Project is a recently established cultural association based in Beirut whose aim is to think together artistic practices and more theoretical forms of inquiries. 98 weeks wants to create a platform for debate, discussion and production in Lebanon and in the Middle East. The research aspect is always thought in close relation to artistic production; both the practice and the theoretical approach can contribute to open up the understanding of each. www.98weeks.org

Celebrating the persistence of the spirit of degeneracy, the original state of every true artist who suffers and reflects the sins of humanity. Degenerate art was a term adopted by the Nazi regime in Germany to describe virtually all modern art. The great Degenerate art exhibition of 1937 was designed to inflame public opinion against modernism. Hitler envisioned the day when German culture would be free of "morbid excrescencies of insane and degenerate men."
Yesterday's degeneracy is today's acceptable face of non-conformity, yet what of the legions of lowlifes toiling day and night (mostly night), forever striving to undermine the prevailing perceptions of decency?
Cosmicmegabrain Proudly Presents
A choice selection of undesirable deviants and the fruits of their animalistic and imbecilic endeavours. We invite you to witness the sordid preoccupations of society's underbelly. Try to grasp the significance of these diabolical creatures, who, like the lowly maggot who feeds on the corpse, are vital to the perpetuation of life; for in order to generate, we must first de-generate!
Come to ridicule, come to be shocked, come to be entertained ...or come to join us

Triumph of the Surface

We are cosmicmegabrain, an independent curatorial group interested in investigating the contaminations between art, society and popular culture by promoting multi-disciplinary artwork from the international spectrum of emerging and established talent, via exhibitions and forums for debate.
Our forthcoming project, Triumph Of The Surface, is a stylish but provocative look at the domination and deviations of the fashion spectrum through the eyes of artists from around the world; a timely commentary on consumerism and globalization and our fascination with celebrity and the self, but, also in places a humorous and arch look at the thing we all love - fashion!
Our Venue - Transit Space

Cosmic Mega Brain is integrated with Transit Space.
Our venue, a 5 floor 20.000 square vacant warehouse in the heart of east London, will be a venue for London Fashion Week in September 2008, as it was in previous editions.
The space is being put to profitable use as a venue for various events in the interim period between it’s recent purchase by property developers until structural surveys finish and development begins; this leaves a window of at least several months.
This building was utilised by BANK, an artists’ group active in London during the 1990s. Their most significant contribution to UK contemporary art was a series of curated group shows, often with comical, and sometimes offensive, titles. As a group they adopted an aggressive stance towards the mainstream contemporary art scene of the time.
This collective was a major force in the emergence of the YBA movement, and included Turner Prize nominees and winners.
Our Artists!
Our goal is to capture the excitement and crystallize the obsession many of us have for surface and in doing so allow the viewer to explore it's deeper meanings and the subjective responses of the various artists on show.
Serpica Naro, Italy

*Fictional fashion brand, launched at Milan Fashion Week on the final day of shows on February 26, 2005.
Serpica Naro is an anagram of San Precario - a political movement that fights against exploitative working conditions. By creating a fake identity the collective managed to shock the media making a fashion show incorporating the ethics of San Precario.
According to the organizers, which are part of the team Chainworkers, the brand will remain to represent "a meeting place of creativity and self-knowledge sharing”.
